Reducing Your Fuel Consumption

With the cost of petrol prices increasing, understanding the top tips on how to make the tank last longer can be hugely beneficial.

Below are some of our top tips on how you can save on the amount of trips to the pump.

Pump up your tyres:

Maintaining your vehicle improves the efficiency of it. It is particularly important to make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. To find out what the correct pressure for your vehicle type is, have a look in your owners manual.

Keeping tyres inflated properly is one of the easiest ways to reduce petrol usage!

Drive at a moderate speed and highest gear possible:

Not only is driving at an acceptable and legal limit safer, it also increases the fuel economy. Sticking to a moderate speed throughout your journey is key.

Driving in the highest possible gear whilst keeping within the speed limit, can help save you journeys to the petrol station. Remember, the faster an engine needs to spin, the more fuel it will use to do so.

Clean the air filter regularly:

If your air filter is clogged this can increase fuel consumption by restricting airflow to the engine. It is therefore vital you are cleaning it when necessary.

Travel light:

Avoid carrying any unnecessary weight in your car. This includes roof racks and any excess weight left in the car.

Anticipate traffic ahead:

A driver can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10% if they do not break and accelerate unnecessarily. By anticipating traffic ahead, you can adjust your speed accordingly.

Avoid strong acceleration:

Excessive speed is the biggest cause of fuel consumption. Therefore, ensuring all acceleration is gentle is a very important factor in having a fuel-efficient drive. Although acceleration is needed, be conscious of how harsh you are accelerating throughout your journey.

Walk when you can:

Not only does walking more regularly have a positive impact on your health and the environment, it will also have a positive impact on your fuel consumption. When travelling short distances, if you are able to, consider walking it next time!

Lift share:

Similar to the above tip, of course using your vehicle less will save petrol consumption. If you are regularly going the same way as someone you know, offer the idea of lift sharing in order to both save on petrol!

Use the air-con sparingly:

Air-con and heat do in fact use up fuel. If fuel efficiency is a big concern, try limiting your AC/ Heat.

Summarise:

Overall, keeping moving and not losing momentum when you can is key. Accelerating harshly from being at a standstill can be very costly in fuel consumption. Driving as smoothly as possible will overall impact on the money you spend at the pump.

Limit the use of AC and heat whilst driving, this simple change can have a noticeable affect on how long a full tank of petrol or diesel is lasting you.

Lift share and walk when possible. Using your vehicle less when you are able too, will have a very positive impact on your fuel consumption.
